First post on Oppo. My beloved 2002 touring's floorpan/rockers are really at the end of it. No more mister nice guy, this will take some time to finish it all properly. One positive remark: my planned engine- and transmission-swap should be somewhat easier now I suppose. Not sure if I'll rebuild the body itself as I was offered a complete and sound ready-to-paint body (supsension-parts/wheels included) yesterday from a guy who had it lying around for the last 10 years but couldn't put himself to finish it. As this offered body is of a 2002 touring automatic (which has a slight larger transmission-bay) swapping the 4-speed for a 5 speed one should be somewhat easier so I'm told. Now the search for a proper engine/transmission can begin. No hibernating for me this winter...

How about putting one of these under the bonnet?

I've always liked the New Class sedans and hatchbacks over the coupes for some reason...

Had cars with much more power but this 2002 was the one car that had me smiling all day long. Everyday. Just the 4-speed made me use it less than I wanted as cruising on the highway can be quite tiresome.

You've got a 2002 Touring?
Kickass :)
What engine have you got in it at the moment, and could you mate that to a 5-speed and tune it up to Tii spec? The old M10 is a bit of a gem.

Nice suggestion but replacing the 4- by a 6-cylinder will have me get over to the governmental-organization to have it fully checked again. And that engine ways probably more than the old M10 so not sure if it will effect the great balance of the 2002. Thinking of a more modern (fuel injected) M10, M42 or M44. The current 2 weber's were always asking attention one way or the other.

M47? I like the idea of going diesel and getting better economy out of a seriously quick 2002 than a Prius :)

Haha, interesting Idea. Swapping fuel to diesel will probably point me to that same organization however. And the sound of a diesel just won't do it I'm afraid.

It's the original 2.0 M10. Mounted to the original 4-speed. That could be replaced by an E21 5-speed but these are getting hard to find over here. The original carb was replaced by twin Webers adding power but ending up in really bad MPG. And they're requiring regular set-up (or it's just my skills or the lack-off). Love the sound though!

I'm amazed (and jealous) that you don't have to register an engine swap anyway, and have it all checked.
Personally, I'm not bothered by the sound. You just have to keep your foot down to get it sounding OK, and I can live with that...

Another 2002 owner. Awesome car and best of luck with your upgrades. Currently I still have the M10 with the 4 speed, but I really want dual webers and a 5.

How about fuel injection? It'll probably be a bit expensive, but you'd get just as much power (maybe more) and better fuel economy.
What are the options for an engine swap? Are you thinking injected M10 from a 320i E21? That'd have your 5-speed attached to it as well.

Replacements are available, if you're feeling ambitious: http://www.wallothnesch.com/karosserie-ble…
If you choose not to repair your touring yourself, do make sure to sell your shell to someone who will. They're rare enough as it is, the remaining ones need to be preserved.
Cool car, welcome.

Adding fuel injection could be it, but the engine is not prepared for unleaded fuel so then I would also want to 0verhaul the head. As BMW 4 cylinders can be found quite easily overhere (Netherlands) that would probably save me quite some work. So options: M10B18 (E30 318i), M64 (E21 320i, based on M10). Or more modern M42/M44 (E36/E46). Or an S14 but then it'll be a very expensive swap and out of my budget.

Don't worry, it won't go to the scrap-heap. Wallothnesch doesn't have a 5-speed E21 either: Für dieses Bild sind zur Zeit leider keine Artikel lieferbar.

Personally I'd go for a 320i E21 engine if you can find one. Mostly for simplicity's sake. I'd expect the engine mounts to be in the same place, throttle cable, clearances etc.
Unless this isn't your first engine swap, in which case go wild :)

College student with no money, but give me two years. How did your 2002 run with the Webers? Did you put them on while you had the car or did it come with them?

The Webers came with the car. It run well with one exception: it was a real gas-guzzler. 7 kilometers with one liter of gas. Should be something like 20 mpg. And every now and then I'd clearly had to re-setup the carbs.
